Current Activities:

(January 2024) The construction funding for this project has been moved out beyond the five-year budget cycle to provide funding for other high priority projects.  The final design is currently on hold until construction funding becomes available.

In 2022, the city received public comments on three proposed alternatives. Based on the recommendations in the 2023 Dunwoody Trail Master Plan, www.dunwoodyga.gov/trailmasterplan. Alternative 1 which included a shared-use path on the east side of Tilly Mill Road is no longer under consideration.

Dunwoody’s Transportation Plan recommends pedestrian and turn lane improvements on Tilly Mill Road between N. Peachtree Road and the city limit near Lost Mine Trail.  Currently, this section of Tilly Mill Road lacks sidewalks on the southbound side of the road. Tilly Mill Road is designated as a bike route in the transportation plan but much of the corridor has narrow lanes with a paved shoulder that varies in width from 0 to 5 feet. Left turn lanes exist at North Peachtree Road, Peeler Road and Andover Drive and right turn lanes are present at most of the side streets.  This project is within a 15-minute walk Brook Run Park, Windwood Hollow Park, Georgia State Dunwoody Campus, Peachtree Middle School, Chesnut Elementary School and multiple places of worship.

The design phase of the project has been funded through the Special Local Option Sales Tax.

Concept Development

The city’s design consultant, NV5, developed three alternative layouts for the path. Based on the recommendations in the 2023 Dunwoody Trail Master Plan, www.dunwoodyga.gov/trailmasterplan, Alternative 1 which included a shared-use path on the east side of Tilly Mill Road is no longer under consideration. Alternative 2 provides a new 6-foot sidewalk on the west side of Tilly Mill Road with on-street bicycle lanes and a reconstructed 6-foot sidewalk on the east side of the road.  Alternative 3 maintains the existing roadway and east shoulder as is while adding a sidewalk on the west side of the road.

Alternative 2:

Alternative 2 widens both sides of the roadway to add 4-foot-wide bike lanes and 6-foot wide sidewalks in each direction.  The sidewalks would be separated from the roadway by a 2-foot to 4-foot-wide grassed buffer.

A pedestrian refuge island crosswalk would be added near Laurelwood Road and left turn lanes are proposed between E. Madison Drive and Andover Drive. Also, the traffic signal at Peeler Road and Tilly Mill Road would be upgraded to add a signalized crosswalk on the west side of the intersection.

This concept will likely require purchasing easements (temporary/permanent) and/or right of way from 64 properties.

Alternative 3:

Alternate 3 provides a 6-foot sidewalk on the southbound side of Tilly Mill Road without altering the existing roadway or adding dedicated space for bicycles.   A signalized crosswalk would be added on the west side of the intersection at Peeler Road.

The smaller footprint reduces the number of required easements and/or right of way to 33 properties and this alternative would have a lower construction cost.
