Concept

Current Activities:

The city and Perimeter Community Improvement District are coordinating plans with the Georgia Department of Transportation to ensure that the Top End I-285 managed lane project leaves room for future improvements at the interchange and to identify potential funding sources for construction.

The city, working with the Perimeter Community Improvement District, is considering long-term improvements at Ashford Dunwoody Road and I-285 to maintain adequate traffic flow on Ashford Dunwoody Road.  The initial concept known as the "Westside Connector" proposed a connector ramp  between the I-285 westbound off ramp and  Perimeter Center Parkway by bridging over Ashford Dunwoody Road.  The city began looking at other alternatives to improve traffic flow at the interchange when it became evident that the connector would impact a proposed development adjacent to ramp, making the right of way needed for the project cost prohibitive.

The proposed alternative consists of keeping the diverging diamond interchange and adding a lane on each side of the Ashford Dunwoody Road bridge over I-285.  The existing bridge would be replaced rather than widened based on the bridge’s age and the need to raise the elevation slightly.  The plan also includes a separate bicycle and pedestrian bridge over I-285 to connect shared-use paths planned on Ashford Dunwoody in Brookhaven and Dunwoody.
