In November 2023, the Dunwoody City Council unanimously approved the Road Safety Action Plan (RSAP), which provides a comprehensive analysis of the City’s street network with an emphasis on safety for all road users. The goal is to save lives by eliminating deadly and serious injury crashes on the City’s road network.
“The Dunwoody City Council is laser-focused on making our community safer for everyone,” explained Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch. “Connectivity is our number one priority, and safe streets are key to providing more options for our residents.”
In April 2023, the City hired Toole Design to develop the RSAP. The consultant team drafted the plan with input from City staff, a Safety Working Group, and broad public engagement. The working group consisted of Dunwoody residents, representatives of area businesses and nonprofits, and representatives of partner agencies, including DeKalb Fire Rescue and the Atlanta Regional Commission. Public engagement included interviews with four groups of community stakeholders, three pop-up input sessions at community events, an online survey with 322 resident responses, and an online mapping exercise with 273 resident responses.
“This plan will provide a path forward to improve street safety. It will also help us compete for regional and federal funding programs,” said Dunwoody City Manager Eric Linton. “Crash data is important, but we’ll also look to the public to learn about their experiences and priorities.”
Crashes in Dunwoody decreased overall between 2017-2021, but killed or serious injury (KSI) crashes have increased since 2017. This Plan includes strategies to eliminate KSI crashes using a data-driven approach that focuses on infrastructure designs, community education, and enforcement efforts on the City’s highest-risk roads.
