Youth City Council is open to students in any grade at Dunwoody High School. It started in 2016 at the urging of former City Council Member Pam Tallmadge.
“I thought it was important to get kids involved because change happens at the local level,” she explained. “My hope was that this would open students’ eyes to new career pathways, while city leaders would benefit from hearing fresh ideas.”
Once a month, students meet with the Mayor, a City Council Member or staff member to ask questions and provide feedback. Students also have the opportunity to tour City Hall and sit in on a City Council meeting.
Mike Berry is the instructional leader for social studies at DHS and serves as the club sponsor.
“I live in Dunwoody, and I see this as a way to invest in my community,” he said. “This program helps students become more aware of how city government works.”
Curiosity led Phoebe Hickey to join the Youth City Council at Dunwoody High School.
“I don’t know much about our city and wanted to learn more about it,” said Hickey, a junior at DHS. “I’ve always liked learning about government, especially local government.”
