When is a fence permit required?

A fence permit is required when installing a new fence, vehicular gate, or replacing an existing fence that is within the front yard or on a corner lot or in within a stream buffer. If constructing a fence within a floodplain, you must first obtain a Variance

When is a fence permit not required?

A fence permit is not required when a fence is completely to the rear of a residential home. However, keep in mind, although a permit is not required the proposed fence must still meet the requirements of the Zoning Ordinance. Please reach out to the Planning and Zoning Department for a courtesy review of any proposed fence, to ensure your compliance with the Zoning Ordinance.

Who can apply for a fence permit?

A permit can be obtained by licensed contractor, property owner, or property owner’s representative.

All applicants please provide:

  1. Fence and Wall Application. Please note, the Owner Affidavit (page 2 of the application) must be signed and notarized prior to submittal.
  2. Site plan*

    *The site plan must show all the property lines and the location of the fence. To create a site plan, you can use an existing survey or print out a property map from the Dunwoody SmartMap

Applying for fence permit

To apply for a fence permit, please submit your materials via Email. Residential fence permits are typically issued within 1-3 business days. There is no fee associated with a fence permit.
