On Saturday, August 10th the Dunwoody Police Department will be hosting “Cuffed for a Cause” at the Wal-Mart in Dunwoody to help raise money for Special Olympics Georgia. The event will run from 10 a.m. till 1 p.m. Each year, the Dunwoody Police Department gets handcuffed to moving treadmills for hours as they walk, walk, walk while collecting donations from customers.
“A little over $100 will send one athlete to the games for free,” says Chief Grogan. “With nearly 23,000 participants, Georgia has the largest Special Olympic program in the country as far as number of athletes, but as of 2011, the state is only ninth or tenth in terms of fundraising. We need to be doing much better because there is a need for more funds and we’re certainly trying to do our part."
In addition to collecting for SOGA, this yearly event provides citizens and DPD officers the opportunity to interact along with a display of various patrol vehicles and equipment the Department uses.
This weekend is a Tax Free holiday in Georgia. What is exempt from State and Local taxes? Clothing (including footwear) with a sale price of $100 or less per item, single purchases of $1,000 or less of personal computer and personal computer-related accessories. General school supplies to be used in the classroom or in classroom-related activities with a sales price of $20.00 or less per item.
If you have any questions about this event or program, please contact Officer Tim Fecht at (678) 382-6917 or Email.
